Junkanoo Awaits You at the Bahamas Island

Junkanoo has become a type of fun celebration on the Bahamas Island. Originally, it was a celebration that occurs only twice in a year; the second day after Christmas and on New Year day. But with the influx of tourists into the Bahamas, it is now common to see the Junkanoo celebrated almost every day as it brings attract much crowd and brings in the money.

Junkanoo is a very serious celebration in the Bahamas. It has an in-depth history behind it. It was thought to be named after an African slave leader named John Canoe. Some people said its name was derived from “I’inconnu”, which is a French word that means ‘masked’. It is one celebration that no one in the whole the Bahamas ever handles with levity for any reason whatsoever.

During the Junkanoo celebration, the slaves were allowed by their masters to visit their families for the celebration. It actually began between the 16th and 17th centuries. Since then till now, it had grown in terms of its organization and acceptability. The celebration of the Junkanoo on the Bahamas Island was seen as a family reunion of sort.

The celebration features a number of interesting things. One of them is the Junkanoo parade.  People put on a headdress and all form of costumes. The headdresses were usually very heavy until they were later modified. This modification had also affected every other form of costumes being used in this celebration.  The process of designing the costumes are not made known to anyone.

Every evening, the Junkanoo is celebrated at port Lucaya and Freeport.  This does not require more than very simple costumes. It is also accompanied by soft music.  The celebration usually takes place at the market place of the Bahamas Island.
